Using The Easy Bee - general

What is The Easy Bee?

The Easy Bee is a software for Windows 2000, Windows XP and higher that saves web users from repetitive and tedious web navigation tasks.

It allows you to record Internet navigation sequences that can include form filling and button clicking and to attach a replay schedule to each sequence. In The Easy Bee, such sequences are called Honeybees. You could call them intelligent agents, bots or Internet macros. Once created, your honeybees will periodically and diligently fly to their target web page: you will always have your web pages on hand and up-to-date.

The gathered web content can be striped of irrelevant content such as banner and menus. Honeybees can indeed cut an extract out of the target web page. It can be a table, an image, or any other document element.

Finally, the gathered content can be compiled on one or several pages in order to group together related data.

This sofware doesn't require any technical expertise. It has been designed to be used by everybody, even by those who ignore what "HTML" means.

My Honeybees are stated as "flying as soon as possible", but actually never fly. Why?

  • Cause 1. You are not connected to Internet, and The Easy Bee Internet connection opening mode is set as 'Detect'. You should consider alternatives to these settings. In this case, when you connect to internet, the Honeybees should start flying.
  • Cause 2. A Honeybee has been "lost" and blocks subsequent bees. In this case, the Hive icon in the taskbar should show a green flashing light. Quit The Easy Bee and the Hive (right-click on the small icon in the taskbar), then restart The Easy Bee and perform a "verify flight" on the incriminated bee. Doing so should show you what problem the bee encountered. Anyway, because this is a real problem, we would appreciate you taking a little of your time sending us the implicated web address.

Patching and upgrading

After upgrading, The Easy Bee doesn't work. The following error message pops up: "Unable to launch the upgrader"

This occured for version earlier than v. 1.1.1 when the package was installed to a custom folder (not "c:\Program Files\Altercept\TheEasyBee Free").

To fix this problem, uninstall The Easy Bee and reinstall the latest version.

If you need to save your honeybees please follow the four steps of the next question.

The upgrade process fails with this message: "Error 1334: The file ... cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in the cabinet file ..."

One of our installation packages prior to version 1.0.24 contains an error that prevent proper installation of subsequent patches.

If you want to upgrade to the latest version without loosing your bees, use the following workaround:

  1. Save all application data located in a folder named "TheEasyBee Free". To find this folder, perform a "search" using Windows Explorer for all files named "TheEasyBee Free" and located anywhere under "Documents and Settings" (Windows 2000/XP) or Windows (Windows 98/Me). The folder should contain 3 sub-folders named "HTMLFiles", "Upgrades" and "XMLFiles".
  2. Uninstall The Easy Bee from Windows Control Panel (add/remove application)
  3. Download and install the latest version from www.TheEasyBee.com
  4. Replace the new folder "TheEasyBee Free" with the one saved in step 1.

The upgrade process fails with this message: "Error applying patch to file..."

This is a bug from Microsoft Windows Installer 1.1. To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of Windows Installer available from Microsoft download site:

Internet connections

What options in the Hive settings should I choose for Internet connection?

The main aspect to consider is the billing scheme of your Internet access.

Permanent connections (typically DSL, ADSL and cable connections): chose "Auto" for the opening mode, and "Smart" or "Never" for the closing mode.

Connections with per-minute charges (typically dialup access): chose "Detect" for the opening mode, and "Never" for the closing mode. This is the default mode that makes the Honeybees flight controlled by you.

Security and privacy

You say that I can use The Easy Bee to regularly check my bank account. What about my passwords? Are they encrypted?

During the development of The Easy Bee, great care was taken when dealing with password security.

When you make a new bee using the Bee Wizard, any text entered in a password field is strongly encrypted. The method used to encrypt the password is a strong standard encryption scheme provided by the operating system. More precisely, the algorithm is the same as the one that encrypts secured Internet connections.

You are the only one to be able to decrypt the encrypted password. Even another user of the same computer cannot decrypt it, because related cryptographic keys are linked to their only creator and user.

Passwords are locally stored on your password. There are not store on any kind of remote server/computer/device.

Because The Easy Bee relies on Internet Explorer, passwords -among other data- are processed the same way with The Easy Bee than with Internet Explorer.

The Easy Bee installs a process that runs in the background. Is The Easy Bee a spyware?

No. Please read our privacy policy.

The background process is the "Hive", the scheduler process that triggers web navigation even when the graphical interface ("The Easy Bee") is closed, thus allowing you to read up-to-date content as soon as you open The Easy Bee. A small bee icon in the bottom right corner of your screen indicates the state of this process. This process only connects to the web sites involved in automated navigation, in exact conformity with what you previously recorded.

The only Internet connection between The Easy Bee and Altercept is related to the automatic upgrade system. When The Easy Bee is launched, it asks www.TheEasyBee.com whether a patch is available. Starting from version 1.1, this request is only performed once a day. If an upgrade is available, you are prompted to install the update. If no patch is available, the main application is launched. The only data sent in this process is the version of The Easy Bee and the current date.

If you want to learn more about spyware, you can check out www.spywareinfo.com or www.spychecker.com for example.

Known limitations

ActiveX and Java Applets

The Easy Bee doesn't handle embedded objects such as ActiveX and Java Applets. Any user interaction with these objects, including Flash objects, will neither be recorded nor replayed.

Miscellaneous incidents

"Malicious script" message from Norton AV when uninstalling

This is a false (or zealous) warning from recent releases of Norton Anti Virus (NAV). You can safely authorize this script to run. The script simply remove folders and files created by The Easy Bee. NAV has no way to "know" whether the script is malicious or not, that's why it needs your help.
